Do Hispanic Voters Support Bush

John Podhoretz writes in the NY Post that that President Bush’s immigration proposal has the primary purpose of getting Latinos to vote for the Republican party:

The specifics and their efficacy (or lack thereof) will be debated over the coming weeks by policymakers and advocates on both sides of the issue. But there’s no question that, by planting his flag firmly in the pro-immigration camp, Bush has once again sought to transform not only the political debate in the United States but the Republican Party as well.

If that is truly the reason Bush is supporting the policy he may be in for a rude awakening. The Center for Immigration Studies reports that a Zogby poll conducted prior to the last election found some surprising results:

An amnesty does not appear to be a way of winning Hispanic votes for either party, with 51 percent of respondents identifying it is a bad idea and 49 percent thinking it
